Trends for Baby Showers

Baby showers are parties that are thrown for expecting parents to shower them with gifts for the new baby. Traditionally, baby showers were only held for the mother to be by women. But, as families get smaller and each individual child gets more attention, baby showers are becoming more and more extravagant. Traditionally the shower is given by a close friend of the expected parents. The party tends to center around gift giving. Although a baby shower arranged by a family member used to seem imposing, there is no set rule and grandparents often jump at the opportunity to celebrate the arrival of the new grand child. The baby shower party can thus be held at a variety of places and at various times.

Many people have baby showers for both parents. Often time, each parent will receive baby shower gifts at their work place. Some people even have men only showers. People from different cultures also incorporate their cultural heritage in the baby shower parties. Some cultures have baby shower, in which gifts are given only to the mother and not for the coming baby. In the Jewish tradition, nothing is to be bought for the baby until it is born. Current trends have altered this notion and many American Jews do not follow this tradition. Many Asian and Middle Eastern countries the baby shower is a growing phenomenon, but it is incorporated into their cultural traditions and are often for women only. In some culture the baby shower is thrown for the mother to be in the seventh month for good luck and the mother must be served seven different items of food for the baby shower meal that all her guests will feed her. Among the Hindu culture in India the baby shower is also held in the seventh month of pregnancy. Traditionally, it was an event which was for women only, but in recent years, India has tremendously westernized and both genders are often included in this occasion.

Traditionally, the baby shower was held only for the first child, but it has now evolved and it is more common for hold a baby shower for every child, including adopted children. It is also common for a parent to have more than one baby shower for the same baby, as friends, co-workers, and family will throw individual parties for the mother o be. While, baby showers have been rapidly evolving, there are some set traditional activities that are still common for baby showers. Baby themed games have been an everlasting tradition for baby showers. Activities and games at a baby shower can change the whole atmosphere and mood of the event. It is also common to give party favors, which are now called baby shower favors by the rapidly expanding favors market. Baby showers are jolly and festive events which will be remembered as a symbolism of the new baby’s arrival.

It used to be that gifts were given to the mother after the baby was born. It was often, just an afternoon tea party for the mother and close female friends. Now that tea party has evolved into elaborate baby shower tea parties with the mother’s family and friends. Now the mother is showered with gifts more than once, often planned to include both men and women.
